Life Thru the Lens
LIFE THROUGH THE LENS
In 2012 we ran the first regional competition to promote wellbeing in communities across the North West of England using the Five Ways to Wellbeing as a framework. Over 1,300 photographs were entered from people across the NW. Wellbeing calendar printed. Competition judged by 5 professional international photographers. Winners photographs were displayed at a community cafe and gallery.
Life Thru the Lens is a not for profit organisation established to develop and deliver creative opportunities to improve mental wellbeing and reduce stress, anxiety and low level depression.
I use the Five Ways to Wellbeing as the framework for all my work.
The Five ways to wellbeing are a set of evidence based actions proven to improve mental wellbeing.Life Thru the Lens focusses on the use of photography and photographic techniques as an aid to mental and physical wellbeing for people with low level mental health issues, including anxiety, stress and depression.
Photography allows people to tell their story and provides an outlet to express their emotions, such as depression or anxiety, and help to process such emotions in a positive manner. Photography can also help to promote positive support networks both through the giving and receiving of positive feedback and through shared interests, as well as encouraging participants to go out into their local communities and environments.
Those I’ve worked with have also reported that photography helps with negative or intrusive thoughts as it provides a shift in perspective, helping them to focus externally on the world around them and their subject matter rather than dwelling on negative thoughts and feelings.
The delivery format for Life Thru the Lens projects is shaped directly from feedback from people and organisations I’ve worked in the past and in consultation with new clients.
